Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
