Our Leading Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

On the surface, Lux may look closer to a difficult scholarly quiz than a new pop project from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided into four different movements and sung in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking symphonic album investigating female mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, frequently via the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the work of other pop stars appear rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost a miracle, and sole praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to alchemize the past and modern styles, its scale are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. What really raises this fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you into its tornado. When she is breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly on the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, everything falls away, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment before a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—where you is going next."

Nearly each song concludes in a totally different place than where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves navigating the line between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in English builds around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. That feat gets repeated by another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried treasure that takes time to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a lavish feast at which the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
